It was almost a month ago that I decided to be more cost-conscience and make some changes to ensure a better financial future for me and my family. What a great experience it has been! (Although it is not as easy as it looks)
For any of you familiar with Dave Ramsey's books or Financial Peace University, you will understand this... I am the "dork" and find it stimulating to put together budgets and devise plans! So you can imagine that those "free spirits" in my family are tired of hearing, "But... Dave Ramsey says!"
After attending Financial Peace University for just a few short weeks, I notice more how the smallest actions (both with budgeting + spending) can affect your bottom line. Many of us, as Americans, think that because "We want one", we should have it. I am challenging myself to take a more adult-like approach... delaying immediate gratification, and re-evaluating "down the road" to see if that item/service is really important to me, and if so, then making my purchase.
With a new mindset, also comes new way of looking at my money.... I have decided that in 2010, I will save more and eat out less. When Wesley and I sat down to discuss this new plan for 2010, he made the comment that it can be difficult to remain on an affordable budget when shopping at the grocery, unless we eat hamburger helper. So the "dork" in me decided to overcome this and find a way to eat in, but still keep the meals interesting. I found this great tool through Dave Ramsey's website called E-mealz. It actually creates weekly meal plans (based on your family size and dietary needs) then creates a shopping list for you (prices and all) at your favorite retailer. For less than $80.00, you can feed a family of 4-6 people 7 meals! See it does pay to have a plan!
